Republican Rep. Jeff Farrington wants to require drug testing for welfare recipients and has introduced legislation to do just that.

A similar bill was enacted by Governor Rick Scott of Florida. Many people argue that it violates citizens Fourth Amendment rights. Cost of testing and who will pick up the tab is another issue.

Drug testing isn’t cheap and making it mandatory to test everyone could cost the state millions of dollars, and leaves some wondering if spending the money is worth it, especially considering that the money they might recoup by ending benefits for those who test positive; wouldn’t come close to the money spent testing people.

Supporters argue that many employers require drug testing upon being hired and that the same should hold true for people trying to obtain welfare benefits.
