(DETROIT) – On Friday, March 1, 2013, Gov. Rick Snyder announced that Detroit is in a financial emergency citing the fact that the current system in place is not working. The city has 10 days to file an appeal or an emergency financial manager will be put in place. The announcement comes just days after the state appointed Financial Review Team reported findings of a financial emergency in the city of Detroit.
“Today’s announcement will add to the growing tension in Michigan. We wait to see if austerity will trump democracy and prosperity. Emergency management has not been tried on a city the size of Detroit in Michigan.
The experiences of Benton Harbor and Pontiac don’t provide a good basis for arguing for the success of emergency management in Detroit. Today, we continue to push to protect our voting rights and demand a sustainable holistic reinvestment approach to solve Detroit’s problems,” said D. Alexander Bullock.
Gov. Snyder projected that the emergency financial manager would be in place in Detroit for at least 18 months. The report submitted to the governor last week found $14 billion in long term liabilities. Emergency managers are in place in several Michigan cities – all of which, with the exception of one, have not solved their deficits.
After a long uphill battle to get Public Act 4 on the ballot, Michigan citizens rejected Public Act 4 during the November general election. The GOP led legislature immediately passed the new law with an appropriation during the lame duck session.
