This special production of the Vagina Monologues was done in response to the recent censoring of two female Michigan Legislators.

Rep. Lisa Brown, was not allowed to speak on the House Floor after using the word ‘vagina’ in her floor speech regarding HB 5711, one of the three super anti abortion bills making its way through the Michigan Legislature.

Rep. Barbara Byrum, was also censored and not allowed to speak she was not allowed to speak on a amendment she had introduced to HB 5711 that had to do with vasectomies.

This story soon gained national media attention, and within a matter of days a special production of the Vagina Monologues was preformed on the steps of the Michigan Capitol. The production included many Michigan Representatives, and Senators, including, Rep. Lisa Brown, Sen. Rebekah Warren, Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, Rep. Barb Byrum, Rep. Stacey-Erwin Oakes, Rep. Diane Slavens, Rep. Rashida Talib, Rep. Vicki Barnett, Rep. Joan Bauer, Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton, and Rep. Maureen Stapleton. The elected officials were also joined by local actors.

The event opened with some remarks from Sen Gretchen Whitmer, Rep. Lisa Brown and Sen. Rebekah Warren. The ladies discussed the incident that got them censored. Sen. Whitmer.

“What we have seen in the Michigan Legislature over the lat 16 months is an embarrassment, and we need to take a stand,”  State Senate Minority Leader Whitmer stated.

“We have a really great show and we look forawrd to sending a message, world is watching and this message is not just for Jase Bolger, and not just for Floor Leader Jim Stamas-this message is for everybody who is watching, that the women of Michigan and the men who love them, are going to reclaim this Capitol.” she noted.

The crowd chanted “Vagina! Vagina! Vagina!” right before the performance begun. Eve Ensler, Rep. Brown and Rep. Byrum locked arms and all three had a group hug.  The show carried on with occasional shouts from the audience and chants from the crowd. Chuckles could be heard throughout the whole show.

Eve Ensler gave a powerful closing monologue directed at the various anti-woman, anti-choice legislation that has been making its way across various GOP states and the men, [for the most part] who have been legislating laws about women’s vaginas and reproductive rights.

“Dudes who want to control my vagina, but are afraid to know my vagina. They can’t even say vagina!” Ensler stated.

Ensler went on to discuss her outrage at the legislature for trying to define person hood and also cutting funding to Planned Parenthood.

Ms. Ensler also spoke out passionately for victims of rape, sexual assault and violence and how the definition of rape is being redefined.

“The undermining of women is the destruction of life itself. No women, no future…DUH! I am really over some powerful men claiming this deep love for fetuses and babies and life-when we know its all about our sexuality and our power. If you really cared about life, YOU WOULD NEVER, EVER consider letting a woman die, rather than preforming an abortion!”

Ensler called for all women to walk out of their jobs or schools on Febuary 14, 2013 for V-Day’s biggest global action event called “One Billion Rising.” This event is to bring attention to the 1 Billion Women on this planet who are beaten, raped or oppressed. She asked that all women on that day walk out of whatever they are doing and go out and dance.

  1. Tantrum!!!!! You have not seen a real tantrum yet. When was the last time you seen a Army of women? A battle cry “Vagina” will be heard loud and clear.

  2. I don't know if this has even been brought up, but in the light of Eve Ensler bringing up this legislation is about controlling our sexuality and power I think it should be talked about. Women identify more with the Democratic Party than the Republican Party. So, for the Republicans to redistrict Michigan and across the country along with the new Vote Supression Laws they are essentially trying to rid women of being elected officials, no?

  3. Yes, in my opinion the GOP is trying to regulate the vote when they don't have mandate of people to do so. This is why it is so important Me, that Michiganders come out in huge numbers on November 6th, despite 'redistricting' (or like we like to call it 'voter suppression', to overcome Michigan GOP plans to place SANITY back our Michigan House of Representatives.
