Lansing — Occupy Lansing will be hosting “A Funeral for Democracy” in Solidarity Square (Reutter Park) on Wednesday, 16 Nov. at 2:30 p.m.
The open memorial will start at the occupation in Solidarity Square and will turn into a march to the Capitol, where the actual funeral will be held. After the funeral, there will be a short march East on Michigan to Washington Square and then South along Washington to Kalamazoo, where the march will turn West onto Kalamazoo in order to end up back at the park.
Occupy Lansing released the following statement on a flier last week:
“American Democracy has died. Born on September 17, 1787 with the adoption of the Constitution, it has finally passed on after a long battle against a disease called Irresponsible Profiteering (more commonly known as Wasteful Greed). Blinded by the illness, American Democracy also suffered from Citizen’s Neglect and a large host of other ailments. Occupy Lansing will hold an open memorial for our beloved ideal on November 14th at 2:30 p.m. in Solidarity Square
We invite you to come and pay your respects to the one who needed what we could not give.”
Occupy Lansing is a leaderless movement. Spokespeople have been appointed and approved by a vote of the General Assembly, which is open to all interested in participating in the movement.
We, the General Assembly of Lansing, do hereby declare the occupation of Solidarity Square in Reutter Park. We stand in solidarity with the movement at Wall Street and others around the world. We are here to stay until a more just, equitable system manifests itself for the 99% of Americans who so desperately need it now. We are strong, we are peaceful, we are united. We are Occupy Lansing.
